Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory which suggests there are 5 stages people go through in life. The theory says that each stage we have different motivations that drive us. If we apply these stages to media then we can try to understand the motivations behind the targets audiences as well as another piece of evidence to support our arguments.

You could think of the levels as relating to the stages you go through whilst growing up. When you are a baby you're only motivations are food and sleep(ORANGE). As you become a toddler your motivations move to security, love and the family(RED). As a teenager you are focused on friendship, family and sexual intimacy(GREEN). As a young adult, you are career driven and want to achieve and be respected by others(PURPLE). Finally as a middle aged person you start to concern yourself with the bigger picture, the world and how you may have impacted(BLUE).
