Hypodermic Needle Model

The Hypodermic Needle Theory or the Magic Bullet Theory.

Image result for hypodermic needle theoryThe theory implied the mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effect on its audiences.  The mass media in the 1940s and the 1950s were perceived as a powerful influence on behavior change.

Several factors contributed to this 'strong effects' theory of communication, including;
-The fast rise and popularization of radio and television
-The emergence of the persuasion industries, such as advertising and propaganda
-The Payne Fund studies of the 1930s, which focused on the impact of motion pictures on children
-Hitlers monopolization of the mass media during WW11 to unify the German public behind the Nazi party.

The theory suggests that the mass media could influence a very large group of people directly and uniformly by 'shooting' or 'injecting' them with appropriate messages designed to trigger a desired response.

They express the view that the media is a dangerous means of communicating and idea because the receiver or audience is powerless to resist the impact of the message.

People are seen as passive and are seen as having a lot of media material 'shot' at them. People end up thinking what they are told because there is no other source of information.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory which suggests there are 5 stages people go through in life. The theory says that each stage we have different motivations that drive us. If we apply these stages to media then we can try to understand the motivations behind the targets audiences as well as another piece of evidence to support our arguments.

You could think of the levels as relating to the stages you go through whilst growing up. When you are a baby you're only motivations are food and sleep(ORANGE). As you become a toddler your motivations move to security, love and the family(RED). As a teenager you are focused on friendship, family and sexual intimacy(GREEN). As a young adult, you are career driven and want to achieve and be respected by others(PURPLE). Finally as a middle aged person you start to concern yourself with the bigger picture, the world and how you may have impacted(BLUE).

Peer and Self Assesment of First Draft

Magazine Feedback - Peer and Self Assessed.

Here is some feedback I gave myself today in class, I also asked a few of my other classmates opinons on my magazine and I filmed them for you to see. My classmates told me some things they liked about the magazine as well as somethings they think I can improve on. I plan to act on this feedback and make as many changes as I can to make my magazine as professional as possible.

Proposal Feedback

I asked three of my friends and family members to read through my proposal and then tell me what they thought about it and then send me what they thought was good and bad about it and why. This is what they said;

Kai Gilbert (15): 'I like the proposal and the whole idea of your magazine overall, I think many people from your targeted audience will read your magazine, as you know how your going to market it to your audience and you know what you want to be included. I think that maybe you could do something to make it more original, like to make it unique'

Natalie Quarrell (34): 'I personally don't think I would read your magazine as I am not a fan of this genre of music, however I know my children would and I would buy it for them, because you have made it very clear how things are going to be layed out and set up which makes me believe it will be a very professional magazine. The only criticism is that I doesn't suit all ages'

Carrie Gandemer (17): 'I really like the whole idea of your magazine, and I this is the sort of magazine I would pick up and buy when i'm at the shops, as it would feature all the artists that I like, I also like how you said you was going to say things truthfully and be upfront, I think that people will respect the magazine for that and trust it more'

In conclusion, I think I do need to do something to make my magazine different from all the others, a unique selling point. But overall I am happy with these comments and I will take them in and work on the criticisms.

Magazine Mood Board

This is my mood board, with a collection of images  that I have found which are a visual representation of what my magazine genre is about, and also the design of my magazine. I have chosen multiple different magazines as I like different aspects of each and I think putting them all together would look good on my magazine. I have included a double page spread, with Adele, which is in black and white, this is very similar to the double page spread I have created for my magazine. All of the pictures included in the power-point, are all either the looks I want to use, the poses or the sort of outfits I want to use for my magazine models.

Codes and Conventions of Magazines

The codes and conventions have allowed me to understand what things I need to include to make a good magazine overall. It has also allowed me to know what the audience will expect from my magazine, and what I need to make sure I include when I create these pages, also to give my magazine a professional.

Music Magazine Audience Survey

I have created a survey to help me understand what people like to have in music magazines, the idea of doing this is so that I can get a feel for what people and my audience will want when I create my magazine.

Analysis Of Contents Page

Contents Page
This is my analysis of two different contents pages. The reason I have done this is to gain knowledge on the norms, and the codes and conventions of music magazines. This will help me when I create my own magazine as I will know what and what not is effective and what I need to include and what is optional to include on my contents page.

Analysing Previous Work

Research Post - Clare Hanington's Blog

For homework this week we got set a research task, of looking at a past AS media students blog and analyzing it. We were told to pick a blog that we thought looked successful and explain why we thought this. I looked at a chose Clare Hanington's blog.  I was reading through some other blogs but I didn't feel as if they went through as much detail as Clare did in her blog. Clare did feel as if Clare made a conscious effort to explain everything she was doing and why she was doing it, for example Clare also uses a range of social media to upload her ideas and when she explains what she has done recently. She uses presentations, prezi, voki, videos herself, written word, and  sound-cloud. I also like how she stuck to a color scheme through her blog, it makes it look more professional and everything looks neat, tidy and its easy to navigate. I also feel that her blog reflects her personality which is important as she spent a lot of time and effort into making it right. I hope my blog is as successful as hers.
